First, understand the cause.
A dark patch can have several explanations. Your clinician considers its history and appearance, including whether it followed acne or irritation, changes with sun exposure or needs further investigation.
A new or changing lesion should be medically assessed before a cosmetic treatment is considered.
Choose the sequence of care.
Depending on the diagnosis, the discussion may include skincare, prescription treatment, a peel, a pigmentation programme or a carefully selected device procedure. Treating irritation or active acne may come first.
Think beyond one appointment.
Some pigment conditions recur. Maintenance and consistent sun protection can be important parts of a plan. Ask about the chance of improvement, recurrence and pigment changes caused by treatment itself.
